Which Ramblers Roll should I go for, Cosy or Thin !?

This is a very common question we get asked a lot when at markets and fairs. The answer usually depends a little on how you or the person you’re buying for currently enjoy spending time outside. .. Do you enjoy heading out in all weathers and throughout the year, usually with a backpack or bag - The Cosy is probably for you. Or are you more of a fair weather, lightweight adventurer? Perhaps walking or about town with a small bag or coat. - Maybe the Thin is for you.

Both the Cosy and the Thin Ramblers Roll offer a layer of water resistant wax cotton on the base and a layer of wool tweed to protect against the cold. The Cosy however also has a layer of dense organic wool felt which is brilliant at protecting you from heat loss when its really cold or damp. There is not much difference in weight only slightly in size, where the thin can fit in a back jean or coat pocket the Cosy is best carried in a bag or backpack.

Use both for a number of different things not just as the name suggests for Rambling! Camping kneel mat, Cafe chairs, Wild swimming change mat or just a picnic in the garden.

Can you wash them or how do I wash them?

Due to the nature of the heritage wax cottons you cannot put these through the washing machine. I would generally advise a light spot wash if needed, wool tweed is generally naturally resistant to moisture and dirt, that is why we chose it as a super fabric! We have found that generally they don’t need washing unless you have an accident with a flask of hot chocolate!

Should you need to, spot wash with a light, wool friendly detergent or soap and dry them flat thoroughly before putting them away. If they get a bit damp or muddy I generally say hang them to dry using the strap when you get home and then brush them off. Some of the marks, and scuffs all add to the patina of our adventures.! Also remember to re-proof the wax cotton dressing every once in a while to keep the wax cotton working efficiently.

How do you treat the Wax - Cotton?

The Wax Cotton we have chosen to use is a traditional Heritage fabric from Scotland or The North of the Peak District (Halley Stevenson or British Millerain). They are wonderful fabrics that along with their wax treatments provide the cotton fabric longevity and a strong water resistance. To keep that water resistance functioning it is advisable to re-proof, treat or apply a dressing to the wax cotton. This can usually be bought from our general store in the form of a tin of wax with instructions on how to best apply. I would normally recommend a treatment before autumn/winter or when you notice the treatment not being as effective as it used to be. So generally every couple of years depending on how much use it gets. If in doubt, drop us a line and we can do it for you for small fee.
